Heatilator Caliber IPI Unit Wont Stay Lit

Our customer called complaining that their Heatilator brand Caliber gas fireplace would not stay lit and that the igniter kept sparking even after the fireplace was lit. They also complained the the flame on the unit was not as it was pictured in the brochure.

First, the main issue was a poor setup. Rockwool had been broken into large pieces and shoved everywhere without regard for the manual. We have found the best way to install rockwool is to brush it into really light flakes and place it directly over the burner ports ... << MORE >>

How to Connect a Thermostat to a Heat n Glo Gas Fireplace

how to connect a thermostat to a heat n glo gas fireplace?

Connecting a thermostat to a heater rated fireplace is a very simple process. To some extent connecting a thermostat depends on if your system is a Milivolt Gas Fireplace or an intermittent pilot system. This article will cover how to connect a thermostat to a Millivolt gas fireplace. The photograph below represents a fairly standard Millivolt valve.

Make sure power is cut at the circuit and the gas is off

Heatilator Novus NXT Will Not Start IPI Plus

The Novus NXT uses IPI plus technology and a wireless remote. When we received the call that this unit was not working, our first instinct was to check the remote. Unfortunately that was not the issue.

Symptoms: When you try and turn the unit on it beeps. On occasion the it will click  but never light (not even the pilot.)

The simplest way to check this --for a technician who has parts in his truck-- is to try a new control module. We replaced the module and the ... << MORE >>

Heat & Glo Tiara II Gas Stove | User Question |

Hello,

I have a 5 year old Heat & Glo Tiara II gas stove. We burn LP. When first lighting it, the pilot ignites fine. I switch the main flame on, and it burns for about 20 seconds, then both main flame and pilot go out. After going through this sequence for 5 or 6 times, the main flame finally stays on and the stove works fine. Any idea what would cause this?

Thanks. ...

6000 TV Shuts Down

This Heat N Glo unit must be a popular unit. I have worked on three in the last week. This unit is a B vent unit. On this particular unit the make up air kit was installed but never vented to the outside! The "dryer vent" was connected to the side of the unit and the side of the unit was sealed tight. Thus the unit was never getting the air it needed!

I disconnected the 'dryer vent' from the side of the unit, left it connected to the firebox and the first problem ... << MORE >>

There Sits A Wood Stove on The Garage Floor!

I debated if I should even write about this or not. I do know that we have several service technicians who check this blog on a regular basis. I was called out on a service call for a wood burning fireplace that was smoking. When I entered the home, the fireplace was not in the usual place that someone might suspect. I asked the homeowner to show me to the fireplace.

Through a 36" fire door and into one of the most beautiful garages I have ever seen we went. The customers garage floor ... << MORE >>

Heat N Glo 6000TV Pilot to High | Soot | Not Burning Correctly

Customers original complaint was that their 6000TV from Heat N Glo had a pilot flame that was extremely high. On inspection of the unit the unit was covered with soot and the pilot flame was out of control. The pilot adjustment screw had no effect on the pilot flame.

The unit was pulled apart and all burners and tubes were cleaned out with brushes and air at 120 PSI. The pilot tube and pilot assembly were so badly sooted and the orifice was missing that we went ahead and replace the entire pilot assembly.

The logs, which in this case were a type of cement log were scrubbed and all black was removed. The firebox itself had a layer of soot which was cleaned off. The unit was then assembled and functioned properly.

On the downside, it had been three years since this unit was properly maintained. The soot had etched into the glass and the glass was not able to be completely cleaned. Glass is MUCH more expensive than a professional service. We highly suggest you have your gas fireplace serviced every year.

Lennox Gas Log Fireplace Shuts Off

Customer has a Lennox brand open faced fireplace with pre-installed gas log set (as opposed to a solid fuel appliance which has been altered to accept gas logs. The unit is a B Vent and does not have glass (or the screen required by code).

Between 20-30 minutes after igniting the unit would shut off and then turn back on after some time elapsed. The technician on site was able to duplicate the issue. As the unit was shutting off the unit made a clinking noise which was consistent with a high limit switch being activated. The switch was located. Using a infrared thermometer the temperature at the location of the switch was taken and it was determined that the switch should not have been triggered. The switch was easily replaced by removing two hex head screws and two spade connect wires. and then reconnecting the new switch.

Whitfield Advantage II Pellet stove Will Not Ignite

Customer contacted us because there Whitfield Advantage Pellet stove would not ignite. After using a multi-meter to determine that the control panel and the fuse were functioning properly it was determined that the igniter needed to be replaced.

Removal of the igniter requires the fan to be removed first.  On first attempt at removing the igniter it was obviously stuck and required the use of a breaker bar. Once loose the igniter should have removed easily, however the prior installer did not apply anti-seize and cross threaded the igniter.

Removal of the igniter required  the use of a 1/4" nut driver inserted through the front of the unit applying pressure to the nut driver using a wonder bar. The wires were then cut off the igniter and a 5/8" socket was used over the igniter. With one tech applying pressure at the front side of the unit pushing on the igniter it eventually came out.

Using a 1/4" 18 NPT Tap the unit was rethreaded and the new igniter installed by screwing it back into place (after applying the anti-seize.)

Heatilator B Vent Gas Fireplace Goes Out Within Seconds

Customers Heatilator  B vent fireplace lights and then goes right out. On inspection the flame was lifting off the burner and going to a ghostly blue appearance. This type of behavior clearly indicated improper fuel to air ratio. In this case the fire was not getting enough oxygen.

After shutting off the gas valve and allowing the unit to cool, the logs were removed and the unit was closely inspected. The hole in the floor of the unit which allows oxygen to pass through was covered in rockwool and the units air shutter was completely closed. Both issues were corrected and the unit lit and operated within specification.
